The ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Astrologers abbreviate it as AC or ASC, and it is also called the rising sign. Your ascendant depends on your time and place of birth; your sun sign depends only on your date of birth.
The ascendant changes sign about every two hours. In Central Europe, a sign takes between 50 minutes (Aries, Pisces) and almost 3 hours (Virgo, Libra) to rise. Two people born on the same day in the same city therefore often have different ascendants.
In astrology, the ascendant covers three areas: how you present yourself, the first impression you make and how you react to new situations. It describes how others see you before they know you well.
Your result
Your result: ascendant, sun & moon
The calculator gives you four results: your ascendant, sun sign, moon sign and descendant. Each result shows the zodiac sign and degree, for example “Scorpio 0° 31′”.
Eastern horizon · AC
Your ascendant
Your ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. The calculator gives it to the nearest minute of arc. If the value is below 1° or above 29°, you get a note, because then a few minutes of birth time decide the sign.
Date of birth
Your sun sign
Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on your birthday. In everyday speech it is simply called your star sign. Your date of birth is enough to find it. Only on the cusp days between the 19th and 23rd of a month does the time of birth decide.
≈ 13° per day
Your moon sign
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon moves about 13° a day and changes sign every 2.5 days. In astrology it stands for emotions and needs.
Western horizon · DC
Your descendant
Your descendant lies exactly opposite your ascendant, 180° away on the western horizon. If your ascendant is Libra, your descendant is Aries. In astrology, the descendant stands for relationships and partnerships.
As a fifth value, the calculator shows the Midheaven, or Medium Coeli (MC). The MC is the highest point of the zodiac in the south and in astrology stands for career and goals.
Calculation
How your ascendant is calculated
To calculate your ascendant, the calculator takes three steps: it converts local time to Universal Time, determines local sidereal time and finds the point where the zodiac crosses the eastern horizon. The formulas come from Jean Meeus’s “Astronomical Algorithms”, the standard reference for observatories and astronomical ephemerides.
1
Date and exact time of birth
Your date and time of birth fix the moment of the calculation. The calculator needs your birth time to the minute, because a 4-minute error shifts the ascendant by about 1°. Date and Universal Time give the Julian Date (JD), the continuous day count used in astronomy.
2
Birthplace, time zone and daylight saving time
Your birthplace supplies latitude, longitude and time zone. The calculator then checks which clock time applied on your birthday – in Germany, for example, whether Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) or Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) was in force. Daylight saving history differs from country to country: West Germany had none from 1950 to 1979, and Switzerland only introduced it in 1981. One hour off shifts the ascendant by about 15°, half a sign.
3
Sidereal time and the rising sign
From Universal Time (UTC), the calculator works out Greenwich sidereal time and adds the geographic longitude. The result is local sidereal time, known technically as the RAMC. Together with the obliquity of the ecliptic (23.44°) and the latitude, this gives the ascendant.
The ascendant formula
AC = atan2( cos RAMC ; −(sin RAMC · cos ε + tan φ · sin ε) )
RAMC = local sidereal time in degrees · ε = obliquity of the ecliptic (23.44°) · φ = latitude of the birthplace
You can calculate your ascendant by hand with this formula and a sidereal time table, or in Excel. The online calculator does every step in under a second.

Calculate your ascendant without a birth time – what’s possible?
Without a birth time, your ascendant can’t be calculated with certainty. Three things are possible: finding your sun sign, narrowing down your moon sign and showing the times at which each zodiac sign was rising.
Tick “I don’t know my birth time” in the calculator. You then get a list for your birthday and birthplace showing which sign was rising on the eastern horizon, and from when to when. If you know whether you were born in the morning, around midday or at night, usually two or three possible ascendants remain.
At sunrise, the ascendant matches the sun sign. After that, the next sign of the zodiac follows about every two hours. Anyone born on 21 June shortly after sunrise therefore has Cancer rising.
Without a time, the calculator works out the moon sign for 12:00 noon. On about 60% of all days, the Moon stays in the same sign for the full 24 hours, and then the result is certain.
Example: rising signs on 21 June 2026 in Munich

Other astrological systems calculate differently. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which in 2026 is offset by about 24° from the Western tropical zodiac. The Vedic ascendant (lagna) therefore often falls one sign earlier. In Chinese astrology, the animal of the double hour of birth counts as the ascendant. Human Design works without an ascendant. This calculator uses the Western tropical zodiac.

The further north the birthplace, the bigger the difference. In Hamburg, Aries rises in 48 minutes; at the equator it takes 111 minutes. In the Southern Hemisphere the order is reversed: there, Aries and Pisces rise the slowest.
That is why Virgo and Libra are among the most common ascendants in Central Europe and at similar latitudes, and Aries and Pisces among the rarest.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the ascendant calculator
Answers on birth time, accuracy and how your ascendant is calculated.
Where can I find my exact birth time?
Your exact birth time is usually on your birth certificate or in the hospital records from your birth. In the US, the long-form birth certificate from the state vital records office often shows the time. In England and Wales, certificates normally record the time only for twins and other multiple births, while Scottish certificates include it. Other sources are the hospital’s maternity records, your parents’ notes and your baby book.
How accurate is the ascendant calculator?
The ascendant calculator is accurate to less than one minute of arc. Jean Meeus’s formulas give sidereal time to fractions of a second and the moon sign to about 0.3°. The biggest source of error is the birth time: a 4-minute difference equals about 1° on the ascendant.
Why can two calculators show different results?
Two calculators show different results when they handle daylight saving time, coordinates, zodiac or birth time differently. There are 4 typical causes: missing historical daylight saving time, rounded coordinates of the birthplace, the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology and a rounded birth time. The house system (Placidus, Koch or Whole Sign) doesn’t change the ascendant, only the other houses.
Can my ascendant change over the course of my life?
No, your ascendant doesn’t change over the course of your life. It describes the sky at the moment of your birth and stays fixed. You only get a different result if you correct your birth time.
Is the ascendant more important than the sun sign?
No, the ascendant isn’t more important than the sun sign; it describes a different area. The sun sign stands for your core self, the ascendant for how you come across. Many astrologers give the ascendant, Sun and Moon equal weight when reading a birth chart.
Does the calculator work for other countries and births abroad?
Yes, the calculator works for any place in the world. It uses your browser’s time zone database, which includes the daylight saving history of each country. Two examples: Austria reintroduced daylight saving time in 1980, Switzerland in 1981. For a birth abroad, the steps are the same: enter the place and read the result.
Calculate your ascendant now
